Save precious luggage space by packing and using multi-use items, such as clothes pins and pill cases, as well as lotions and shower caps the hotel provides.

Packing for a business trip or vacation can be a challenge. Making room for all of the essential items can be difficult; however, travelers can save some space by packing and using items that have multiple uses. Following are ten convenient items that can have two or more uses for travelers.

Hotel Amenities and Appliances for Business Travel

  1. Shower caps. Tuck the extra shower cap into luggage before checking out of the hotel. The handy little piece of plastic can be used not only to keep hair from getting wet in the shower, but can also protect cameras if taking photos in the rain or snow.
  2. Shampoo. The little shampoo bottles that hotels provide are also handy to keep in a carry on bag for another use: washing clothes by hand. Wash clothes in the sink, then hang them up with a clothes pin.
  3. Lotion. The small bottles of lotion found in many hotel rooms can also be used as shaving lotion, to tame flyaway hairs (rub a little on the hands and then smooth hair with it), and to get rid of static cling associated with wearing panty hose (rub some on the hands and then down the legs).;
  4. Newspaper bags. Many hotels and home delivery newspaper services tuck newspapers into plastic bags. These can be used again to store shoes in luggage, for wet umbrellas or to hold onto trash.
  5. Coffee maker. Take advantage of the hotel room coffee maker for other things: boil water for oatmeal, tea or even soup, or use it to boil water that might be unsafe to drink.
  6. Toilet seat covers. The thin paper covers found in public rest rooms can be used as oil blotting sheets for the face.

Double Duty Items to Pack at Home

  1. Disinfectant wipes. These wipes are a business traveler's essential. Use them to wipe down items frequently touched by others: the tray table on the airplane; the telephone, remote control, and door knobs in hotel rooms; and anything else that may be harboring germs.
  2. Clothes pins. Clothes pins can not only be used to pin up garments to drip dry in the bathroom, but can also hold items together. In addition, a clothes pin can be used in a hotel room to pin closed drapes that don't want to shut completely.
  3. Pill cases. Pill cases are handy ways to dole out each day's dosage of prescription pills or vitamins. However, the tiny compartments are also a good size for storing earrings and other small jewelry -- preventing it from getting lost in an over-stuffed suitcase or brief case.
  4. A shawl. For female business travelers, a shawl tucked into a briefcase or bag can not only cover the shoulders on a chilly night, but can also be used as a skirt or sarong, a blanket to cuddle up with on a flight, or even a table cloth.

Packing smart for a business trip means packing items that can be used for more than one purpose. Pack and use these mutli-use items to save precious luggage space.
