Organize Travel With Pill Boxes

Travelers Use this Handy Roll of Mini-Containers for More than Pills

© Dan Florio

How to hold office supplies, personal effects, toiletries, and even spices in your bags? A tidy roll of small connected boxes holds more than pills for the travel savvy.

Business travelers need multiple containers to house all kinds of tiny, miscellaneous items on the road. It's especially good if you can keep all the containers physically connected so they don't roll around the inside of your luggage. An organized traveler is a happier, less stressed traveler.

Available at drugstores like Rite Aid and some dollar stores, the plastic Seven Day Stackable Pill Box by Home Master begs the chance to be put to multiple uses by creative travelers. Each round pill "box" is a different bright, translucent color, so it's easy to pick out of a dark bag. Each box becomes the lid for the next box below - it's important to open each section with care to not spill any loose contents.

Business Travel Supplies - store your small, loose, but crucial office supplies - instead of pills - in these colorful and clear containers.

  • Stamps
  • Rubber Bands
  • Paper Clips
  • Kneadable Erasers
  • Pencil Leads
  • Pencil Erasers
  • Thumb Tacks, Push Pins

Travelers' Small Personal Items - When you get to your hotel each night, place your small valuables in this organized kit. It's easy to see what's inside, and makes morning dressing more simple (even when you're half asleep).

  • Cuff links
  • Rings
  • Chains
  • Earrings
  • Hair Ties
  • Bobby Pins
  • Small Safety Pins
  • Small Sewing Kit

Toiletries - Add just enough to each pill box for a day's worth of sunscreen, astringent, soap or even sanitizer.

  • Daily doses of Sunscreen or Moisturizer
  • Cotton balls soaked in Astringent or Toner - one for each day
  • Q-tips split in half
  • Doses of alcohol-based Hand Sanitizer Gel
  • Toothpaste
  • Sample sizes of Soaps (Lush Cosmetics stores will cut you sizes to fit - try the Mudflats soap for heavy road grime removal)
  • Also, Lush will cut small sizes of their unique travel solids, like Deodorant, Shampoo, Conditioner and Massage Bars

Spices - for those who use hotel kitchenettes or at least the microwave. Add a few spices to boring re-heated convenience store meals.

  • Salt (get a gourmet salt, where a little goes a long way)
  • Pepper (coarse ground black is tastiest)
  • Basil
  • Rosemary
  • Thyme
  • Garlic (powdered is fine, but even small fresh cloves will fit in these containers)
  • Cinnamon

For Coffeephiles - Don't stress about stale hotel coffee when you add your own additives or gourmet creamer. Add enough in each box for each day of travel. (Or bring in your carry on for decent coffee when you fly).

  • Powdered Cardamom
  • Powdered Creamer
  • Sugar
  • Splenda
  • Equal
  • Nutmeg
  • Cocoa

Non-Coffee Beverages - Enjoy whatever hot or cold beverages are stimulating/relaxing/healthy in an organized fashion.

  • Single servings of loose Teas (green teas, black teas, herbal teas)
  • Gator-aid Powder
  • Crystal Lite Powder
  • Emergen-C packet contents
  • More Sugar and sugar substitutes

Pill Like Uses - Yes, the pill boxes can also be used for pills, as advertised.

  • Vitamins
  • Mineral Supplements
  • Herbal Supplements (ie - ginger pills for motion sickness)
  • Over the Counter Medicines (best for travel - Advil, Tums, Benadryl)
  • Actual Medications

Regular pill containers are also useful if you can find the larger sizes - the ones that hold the "horse pills" or a full day's worth of vitamins. The small, regular "days of the week" pill snap-up boxes won't hold as much as the round pill tower, if you can find it. Keep looking and grab a stack when you see them. The Magellan online store has items worth looking into as well, with containers made specifically for travelers.
